What it covers

Types of health coverage

Each type of plan works differently. Some are comprehensive major medical coverage, while others are limited or pay benefits in addition to a health plan.

  • ACA Marketplace plans

Comprehensive plans that cover essential health benefits. Depending on your household income and other factors, you may qualify for premium tax credits.

  • Individual and family health insurance

  • Short-term and limited-benefit plans

Plans with narrower benefits that are not ACA-compliant major medical coverage and are not a substitute for comprehensive coverage.

  • Supplemental insurance

Dental, vision, accident, critical illness and hospital indemnity coverage that works in addition to your health insurance, not instead of it.

Why it matters

Comprehensive coverage and extra coverage are not the same

Plan names can sound alike even when the coverage is very different. ACA-compliant plans cover essential health benefits and cannot refuse coverage or charge more because of a pre-existing condition.

Short-term and limited-benefit plans generally do not follow those rules, and supplemental policies pay benefits alongside a health plan rather than replacing it. Knowing which is which can help you avoid surprises when you need care.

If you lose job-based coverage, move or have a baby, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to get a Marketplace plan outside Open Enrollment.

It depends on your household, your budget, how you use care and whether you qualify for help paying premiums. We can explain how each option works so you can compare them.

Marketplace plans and other ACA-compliant individual plans are generally available during the annual Open Enrollment period or during a Special Enrollment Period after a qualifying life event. Other types of coverage, such as supplemental policies, may be available at other times.

No. Supplemental policies pay benefits in addition to health insurance and are not a substitute for comprehensive coverage.
