What it covers

How Marketplace plans work

Marketplace plans are comprehensive health coverage. Knowing when you can enroll, how financial help works and how plans are organized makes them easier to compare.

  • Special Enrollment Periods

Depending on your household income and other factors, you may qualify for a tax credit that can lower your monthly premium.

  • Metal tiers

Most plans fall into Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum tiers, based on how you and the plan share costs, not on the quality of care.

  • Provider networks

Plans may use different network types, such as HMO, EPO or PPO, so it helps to check whether your doctors and hospitals are in network.

Why it matters

Compare more than the monthly premium

A plan with a lower premium often comes with a higher deductible and higher costs when you get care. Looking at deductibles, copays, out-of-pocket maximums and provider networks together gives you a clearer picture of what a plan may cost over a year.

If you already have a Marketplace plan, it helps to review it each Open Enrollment. Your income, household, doctors and prescriptions can change, and so can the plans available where you live.

Report changes in your income or household to the Marketplace during the year, since they can affect the financial help you receive.

ACA Marketplace questions

You can generally enroll during the annual Open Enrollment period. Outside that time, you may be able to enroll if a qualifying life event gives you a Special Enrollment Period.

Eligibility depends mainly on your expected household income and household size, along with other factors, such as whether you can get affordable coverage through a job. We can help you understand the application and how the credit is applied.

It depends on how you expect to use care and how you want to balance premiums with out-of-pocket costs. Bronze plans usually have lower premiums and higher costs when you get care, while Gold and Platinum plans usually work the other way. Depending on income, some people may also qualify for lower out-of-pocket costs with a Silver plan.
