How Medigap policies work

Medigap policies are sold by private companies and work only with Original Medicare. What a policy helps pay depends on its plan letter.

Why it matters

Understand where Medigap fits

Medigap and Medicare Advantage are different paths. Medigap adds to Original Medicare, while Medicare Advantage is another way to get your Part A and Part B coverage. Because they do not work together, it helps to understand both before you decide.

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period generally lasts six months, starting the first month you have Part B and are 65 or older. Outside that period, except in certain situations, a company may use health questions to decide whether to sell you a policy.

The right choice depends on your situation, including your health needs, your doctors and how you like to receive care.
